Would You Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Connection?

I would not connect to a nearby business or neighbor's wireless access in order to use the Internet for free.  This is stealing. Even if my neighbor gave me permission, I would still not do this because it is unethical.  If public places have "hot spots," I think this is alright because it is done publicly but not an isolated neighbor stealing from another.  It would be hard to detect that someone was using your network at home but if caught, people need to be punished.  On the other hand, the neighbor with the network needs to be punished in some way too for not having a secured connection. Not sure how punishment could be carried out, but this will be a continued hot issue for some time to come.

Response to article "Employers Asking for Facebook Passwords" by Alison Doyle

Wow! Employers are actually asking for passwords for social media networks? I totally
agree with Doyle in that these employers should not request this kind of personal information.  Employers, if this is a problem, should seek help from their IT dept. in order to block such occurrences.  It is all about integrity.  If employers would not ask for such information and employees would do their job and not get on social networks, then all would be well.  There is a time and place for everything and employers and employees know this!

Picture and Comments on PowerPoint Presentations June 23-June 29

PowerPoint presentations are great to use for school and business presentations.  Because of design themes and images that can be inserted, they can make content be more energetic.

Concepts Learned

Technology has so many kinds of users. While I knew about a home user, business user, and mobile user, I learned a new type of user called a power user. This type of user is in the business world completing such tasks as engineering projects, architectural design projects, and graphic projects. I also learned that an enterprise user is basically an employee or customer that uses computers or mobile devices.

Wikis are something that I also learned about in the assigned readings this week. This is a collaborative website in which a group can create, add, delete or modify content.

Netiquette is a term that I focused on as well.  This is an established code of acceptable behaviors that users should follow.  Using abbreviations and acronyms, long with emoticons can be tricky. Although I knew some, like :) and BTY, I did not know others listed in the text, like FWIW and IMHO.  It is important that your audience understands all terms; otherwise, people will become confused and this can lead to miscommunication.

The tutorials on how to set up a blog and insert a picture has been informative as my blog continues to grow.  I have also learned in other tutorials how to work with folders which is a good organizational tool to have.

Should Apps Be Allowed to Track Your Location?

Apps should be used if, for example, an emergency takes place.  A teenager who runs away can be tracked and brought home to safety.  If a small child gets kidnapped, then an app could be used to track the abductor.  Apps can transmit locations very easily and sometimes this can lead to the disadvantage of tracking. For example, if a person is being stalked or a robbery is in the plans, then obviously the app usage can be dangerous.  It would be nice if everyone could expect the privacy when downloading an app, but there is always a risk.  For official matters, then yes apps should be used, but socially then no.  No way to separate the two.

What Punishment for Webcam Spying is Appropriate?

If webcams can be utilized to visually track, for example school equipment, then there is a good purpose, but when they are used to view students at a daily school day, it is not being used in a good way.  Viewing people without their permission is a crime.  Technology has brought us to a point in which visuals are wide spread, with and without permission of people, thus causing a huge debate over privacy laws.  If a GPS takes traffic photos of people running stop lights, then this is trying to catch people in unlawful acts, and at the same time, this is protecting others while driving. This makes sense, however, these same kinds of cameras can view other activities in the area of people then it invades the privacy acts.  Overall, all cameras, including webcams, should be used to provide a safe, protective, and orderly environment thus the purpose stands; if not, then it is a crime and should be punished in a court of law. Civil charges should be brought against the person or people who recorded these unlawful viewings.

Technology Divide

Technology can cause a division among the haves and have nots.  Obviously, people that have resources have no issue with purchasing a computer and using the Internet.  Others who are less fortunate can't afford the latest technology and must rely on others ways to find such resources. Today, many of our school systems are providing every student with access to a notebook or laptop to assist in their educational assignments which is a plus.  Students are benefiting greatly from such resources by completing research and writing essays using various programs. Because schools are finding funds to provide this equipment then students should be required to use this technology.  The digital divide is surely closing the gap on this issue.

Text Messaging

Text messages are a wonderful way to communicate, and some people would say they are taking over our lives.  It is scary to think how many people text while driving.  So many people practice this unsafe activity and cause people to die as a result.

Another way text messaging has caused some problems is in the school setting.  Because so many people text and use abbreviations and acronyms, it filters over into formal writing assignments.  Instructors are probably struggling to figure out such things as B4 and LOL in documents.  The way people transfer texting into the class does indeed cause issues.  Teachers should not allow texting abbreviations and acronyms in formal writing. People need to be mature enough in their writing to make a distinction.

On the other hand, texting can have a positive impact on communication skills.  People find that abbreviating or using their community dialect puts them at ease and allows them to show some pride in an informal setting while communicating with family and friends.

There is a time for everything; there is a time for texting in the right situations.

Welcome Message

My name is William and I live in Lumberton.  This is my very first attempt at creating a blog, so I am a bit interested in seeing how all this works.  Communication is a vital part of any person's life and learning a new way to present ideas to others should be a great learning experience.

Technology has definitely changed over the past few years.  My mom tells me how they used typewriters when she was in high school and what a big transition it was to change over to computers when she was in college.  Technology is advancing daily and so many things are now being used that we take for granted like a cell phone and Facebook.  Social media has taken off with online dating and Twitter accounts; it seems like it is endless.  Who knows what the future will hold with all these advancements. Technology in the work place and in educational goals benefit people all over the world.
